Early Life and Learning
Francis Assikinack was born on Manitoulin Island. This island is located in Lake Huron in what is now Ontario, Canada.
He grew up speaking only the Ojibwe language. He did not learn English until he was older. In 1840, he started studying at Upper Canada College. This is where he learned English.
His father was Jean-Baptiste Assiginack. He was a very important leader among the Ojibwe people.
Working for His Community
Francis Assikinack wanted to study medicine. However, the government at the time did not provide him with the support he needed for this path.
Instead, he worked for a government department. This department was involved with Indigenous peoples in Canada. For some time, he also taught school. He taught in a community called Wikwemikong.

Francis Assikinack is best known for his writings. He wrote three important papers. These papers were about the customs and culture of the Ojibwe people. His work helps us understand their traditions and way of life from the past.
