Francis Irsch (born December 4, 1840, in Landkreis Trier-Saarburg, Germany – died August 19, 1906, in Tampa, Florida, USA) was a brave American soldier. He fought during the American Civil War, a major conflict in U.S. history.
During the war, Francis Irsch was captured by the Confederate States Army. He was held as a prisoner of war until he was set free on March 1, 1865.
A Hero's Recognition
In May 1892, Francis Irsch received the Medal of Honor. This is the highest award for bravery a soldier can earn in the United States. He earned it for his amazing actions during the Battle of Gettysburg.
Bravery at Gettysburg
The Battle of Gettysburg was a very important battle in the Civil War. It happened on July 1, 1863. Francis Irsch showed incredible courage on that day.
He bravely attacked the enemy from the side, surprising them. This led to him capturing many enemy soldiers. He also held a part of the town against a much larger enemy force. This was a critical moment, as it gave the Union Army time to gather on Cemetery Hill. His actions helped turn the tide of the battle.
