Francis Johnson (academic) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Francis Johnson was a smart person who worked at Oxford University. He was a teacher and also helped manage the university. He held an important job called the Master of University College, Oxford, which means he was the head of that college.

Francis Johnson's Time at Oxford

Francis Johnson was the Master of University College during a period in England called the Commonwealth of England. This was a time when England did not have a king. Instead, the country was led by Oliver Lord Protector and the Parliament.

The King Returns to Power

Things changed a lot in England in 1660. On May 5, 1660, Charles II was declared King. This event is known as the English Restoration, because the king was "restored" or brought back to power.

Changes at University College

Because the king was back, many people who had been in charge during the Commonwealth lost their jobs. On August 1, 1660, Francis Johnson had to explain why he should keep his job as Master of University College. He said that he was put in charge by Oliver Cromwell and the Parliament.

However, his arguments did not work. Francis Johnson was replaced by Thomas Walker. Mr. Walker had been the Master before the Commonwealth period. Soon after, some other people who had been kicked out of the college in 1648 were allowed to come back. These people included Thomas Radcliffe, Obadiah Walker, and Abraham Woodhead. At the same time, four of the people who were currently working as Fellows (senior members) at the college were asked to leave.
