Francis Lloyd (Royalist) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Francis Lloyd (died 1669) was a Welsh politician who lived a long time ago. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a part of the government, from 1640 to 1644. He also fought as a Royalist soldier for the King during the English Civil War.

Early Life and Family

Francis Lloyd was the son of Sir Marmaduke Lloyd. His family lived in a place called Maesyfelin in Cardiganshire, Wales.

Lloyd married twice. His first wife was Mary Earl, who was the daughter of John Earl of Carbery. Later, he married Bridget Leigh, whose father was Richard Leigh from Carmarthen.

Political Career

In April 1640, Francis Lloyd was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Carmarthen. This was for a short time, in what was called the Short Parliament. He was chosen again for Carmarthen in November 1640 for the Long Parliament, which lasted much longer.

Sir Francis Lloyd also held an important job for King Charles I. He was the King's Comptroller of the Household. This meant he helped manage the King's royal home and finances. Because of his service, King Charles I made him a knight in Oxford on March 24, 1643.

English Civil War

The English Civil War was a big fight between those who supported the King (the Royalists) and those who supported Parliament. Sir Francis Lloyd was a strong supporter of King Charles I.

Because he fought for the King, Sir Francis Lloyd was removed from Parliament on February 5, 1644. In the same year, he became a top commander of the King's horse soldiers in Pembrokeshire. However, his forces were defeated in a battle near Haverfordwest.

Later, on December 18, 1645, Sir Francis Lloyd was captured as a prisoner in Hereford. After the war, on January 24, 1646, he had to pay a fine to get his family's lands back.

After the War

After the war ended and the King's son, Charles II, became King again (this time was called the Restoration), Sir Francis Lloyd was given another important role. He became a Gentleman of the Privy Chamber for King Charles II. This was a special position close to the King.

Sir Francis Lloyd passed away in 1669.
