Francis Phoebus (born December 4, 1467 – died January 7, 1483) was a young king. He ruled as the King of Navarre from 1479 to 1483. He was also the Viscount of Bearn and Count of Foix starting in 1472. Francis was the son of Gaston, Prince of Viana. His grandmother, Queen Eleanor, was the ruler before him. She advised him to be friends with France.
When Francis became king, not everyone agreed with his rule. One group, called the Agramont party, supported him. However, another group, the Beaumont party, supported Ferdinand the Catholic. Ferdinand was a powerful king from Spain. He began to put pressure on the Kingdom of Navarre. This pressure eventually led to a big invasion in 1512.
His Short Reign
Francis Phoebus's time as king was very short. He was still young, so his mother, Magdalena of Valois, helped him rule. She was known as the regent, meaning she governed in his place.
Francis died young, at only 15 years old. He passed away while playing a musical instrument called a pipe. He was buried in a place called Lescar.
