Gaston, Prince of Viana, also known as Gaston de Foix, was born in 1445 and died on November 23, 1470. He was the son of Gaston IV of Foix and Queen Eleanor of Navarre. This made him the heir to both of their important families. Because he was the Crown Prince of Navarre, he was given the special title of Prince of Viana.
Gaston's Family Life
Gaston married Magdalena of Valois on March 7, 1461. Magdalena was the daughter of Charles VII of France, who was the King of France, and Marie of Anjou. Their wedding took place in a town called Lescar.
Gaston's Children
Gaston and Magdalena had two children together:
- Francis I of Navarre: Born in 1467, he became King of Navarre from 1479 until his death in 1483.
- Catherine I of Navarre: Born in 1470, she became Queen of Navarre in her own right from 1483 until 1517.
A Tragic End for Prince Gaston
Sadly, Gaston died in 1470. He was hurt during a jousting tournament in a place called Libourne, which is in Aquitaine. A jousting tournament was a sport where knights on horseback would try to knock each other off with lances.
Because Gaston died before his mother, he never became king of Navarre himself. Instead, his children, Francis I and then Catherine I, took the throne after him. Gaston's wife, Magdalena, played a very important role in ruling Navarre for many years. She guided the kingdom until Catherine married John III of Albret in 1494.
