Marie of Anjou (born October 14, 1404 – died November 29, 1463) was a very important person in French history. She became the Queen of France when she married King Charles VII in 1422. She was queen until 1461. Marie often helped rule the country when the king was away. She even led the council of state several times.

Marie of Anjou's Life

Marie was the oldest daughter of Louis II of Anjou. Her father claimed the throne of Naples. Her mother was Yolande of Aragon, who claimed the throne of Aragon.

Early Life and Marriage

In 1413, Marie was promised in marriage to her second cousin, Charles. He was the son and heir apparent (the person next in line to the throne) of Charles VI of France.

In 1418, a group called the Burgundians took over Paris. Charles had to leave Marie behind. However, John the Fearless helped Marie get to Saumur so she could meet Charles again. But Charles did not arrive for their planned meeting.

Marie and Charles finally got married on December 18, 1422, in Bourges. This marriage made Marie the Queen of France. However, she was never officially crowned. Her husband, King Charles VII, won the Hundred Years War. This victory was greatly helped by the support from Marie's family, especially her mother, Yolande of Aragon.

Marie as Queen

Queen Marie was very active in her role. She often led the council of state when the king was not there. During these times, she had special authority, like a regent. A regent is someone who rules when the king or queen cannot. She even signed official documents as "lieutenant of the king" in April 1434.

Marie also went on several religious journeys called pilgrimages. For example, she went to Puy with the king in 1424. She also traveled to Mount St Michel by herself in 1447.

Marie and Charles had fourteen children together. In 1455, a writer named Robert Blondel wrote a special book for Queen Marie. It was called the "Treatise of the Twelve Perils of Hell".

Marie as Queen Dowager

In 1461, King Charles VII passed away. Their son, Louis XI, became the new king. This made Marie a queen dowager. A queen dowager is the widow of a king. Her son gave her the Chateau of Amboise and money from Brabant.

In the winter of 1462-1463, Marie of Anjou went on another pilgrimage. This time, she traveled to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. She made this trip in winter, which was unusual because the roads were very bad.

Marie died at the age of 59 on November 29, 1463. She passed away at the Abbaye de Chateliers-en-Poitou. This place is now in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. She is buried next to her husband in the Saint-Denis basilica.
