Francis Edward Watson (born August 9, 1860 – died October 27, 1930) was a New Zealand cricket player and a schoolteacher.

Early Life and Education

Francis Watson was born on a ship near Saint Helena. His father was a clergyman, which is a religious leader.

Francis spent his childhood in India. Later, his family moved to Tasmania, an island state of Australia.

A Teacher in New Zealand

After living in Tasmania, Francis moved to New Zealand. There, he started working as a schoolteacher.

He became the headmaster of Campbell Street School. This school was located in Palmerston North, a city in New Zealand.

Cricket Career

Francis Watson played only one first-class cricket match. First-class cricket is the highest level of cricket played in a country.

He played for a team called "West Coast." This team was made up of players from the western part of New Zealand's North Island.

The match was against the Wellington team. It took place in December 1879 at the Basin Reserve.

Francis batted third for the West Coast team. He scored six runs in his team's first turn at batting. His team won the match by six wickets. However, he did not get to bat a second time.

Later Life and Family

After he retired, Francis Watson moved to Te Puke. This town is in the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand.

He passed away there in October 1930. Francis had an older brother named George Watson. George was also a cricketer and played several matches for the Canterbury team.
