Francis Willoughby, 2nd Baron Middleton (born October 4, 1692 – died July 31, 1758) was an important British politician. He served in the House of Commons, which is like a main part of the British government, from 1713 to 1727. He also inherited a special title called a barony, which is a noble rank in the Peerage of Great Britain.
Early Life and Education
Francis Willoughby was the oldest son of Thomas Willoughby, 1st Baron Middleton. His mother was Elizabeth, who was the daughter of Sir Richard Rothwell. He also had a brother named Hon. Thomas Willoughby, who also became a Member of Parliament.
Francis went to school at Eton, which is a very famous school. After that, he studied at Jesus College, Cambridge, a well-known university. He finished his studies in 1712, earning a degree called a Master of Arts (MA).
A Career in Politics
Francis Willoughby started his political career by becoming a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is someone elected by people to represent them in the House of Commons. He was chosen to represent the area of Nottinghamshire in two general elections, first in 1713 and then again in 1715.
Later, in the 1722 general election, he was elected as an MP for Tamworth. He continued to serve as an MP until 1727.
Inheriting a Title and Estates
In 1729, Francis Willoughby's father passed away. When this happened, Francis inherited his father's title and became the 2nd Baron Middleton. This meant he took on a noble rank.
He also inherited large family properties. These included Wollaton Hall in Nottinghamshire, which became his main home. He also inherited Middleton Hall in Middleton, Warwickshire.
Francis Willoughby also held the position of High Steward of the Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield starting in 1729. This was another important role in the community.
Family Life
In 1723, Francis Willoughby married Mary Edwards. They had three children together. Their two sons later inherited the barony, one after the other. They also had a daughter, whose name is not known.
