Francisco Azorín Izquierdo (born September 12, 1885, in Monforte de Moyuela, Spain – died December 27, 1975, in Mexico) was an important Spanish politician. He was a key member of the Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) in the Córdoba area. He was also a talented architect.

Early Life and Education

Francisco Azorín Izquierdo was the son of a Guardia Civil officer. He grew up in the Alicante province. He studied at a technical institute in Teruel. In 1902, he moved to Madrid to study architecture. That same year, he joined the PSOE political party. In Madrid, he became good friends with Pablo Iglesias, a very important socialist leader.

Azorín Izquierdo was very good at languages. He could speak English, French, and German. Because of this, he often traveled with Pablo Iglesias to international events starting in 1910.

Career as an Architect

In 1912, Azorín Izquierdo moved to Málaga. He worked there as an architect for the government. Later, he moved to Córdoba for another government job. In July 1912, he married Carmen Poch Puga.

Between 1917 and 1927, he worked as an independent architect. He also had a part-time job as a city architect in Ecija. He created his own unique style of architecture. His designs often showed a focus on social ideas. In the early 1930s, he opened an architecture office in Madrid. He worked with José Mauro de Murga Serret there.

Political Journey

Azorín Izquierdo became very active in the socialist movement in Córdoba. In 1914, he spoke at a meeting for young socialists. He later became a member of the national committee for the Socialist Youth.

He served as the president of the PSOE party in Córdoba city and province many times. He also led the Citizens' Federation and a union for farm workers.

Running for Office

In 1919 and 1923, he ran for a seat in the national parliament. However, he faced unfair practices during these elections. This stopped him from being elected. He also ran for the city council. Just before the election, his employers told him to move to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Azorín Izquierdo refused to go. He stayed and ran for election. He won and served on the city council until 1922. He was not re-elected in 1922.

Between 1928 and 1931, he was a national spokesperson for the PSOE. In 1931, he was elected to the Córdoba city council again. In the same year, he was also elected to the Spanish parliament. He did not get re-elected to parliament in 1933. This was partly due to disagreements within his party in Andalusia.

Later Life and Exile

Azorín Izquierdo was part of a more moderate group within the PSOE. He sometimes disagreed with his local party organization. Because of this, he was not chosen to run in the 1936 parliamentary election.

In 1938, he moved to France. He worked there as a Spanish consul in Tarbes and Toulouse. In 1939, he moved to Veracruz, Mexico. In Mexico, he worked with his sons on a national monument. This monument honored Lázaro Cárdenas and was opened in 1974.
