Francisco Jover y Casanova (born 1836 in Muro de Alcoy, died 1890 in Madrid) was a talented Spanish artist. He was known for painting important historical moments and creating beautiful portraits of people.

Biography of Francisco Jover y Casanova

Francisco Jover y Casanova started learning art in his hometown. Later, he went to the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. There, he studied with a famous painter named Federico de Madrazo.

In 1864, he won a medal at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. This award helped him get a special scholarship from the government. The scholarship allowed him to study art in Rome, Italy, at the Accademia Chigi.

While in Rome, he often visited the studios of Mariano Fortuny. Fortuny was a very influential artist, and his style greatly inspired Jover y Casanova.

One of Jover y Casanova's paintings, showing the Pontifical Court (the Pope's court), won a gold medal. Many of the artworks he created in Rome were sent back to Spain for exhibitions. These paintings also won several awards. His painting of the "Conquest of Oran" was bought by the Spanish government. It was then displayed in the meeting room of the Senate.

After returning to Spain, Francisco Jover y Casanova settled in Madrid. He continued to paint and also became involved in teaching art. He worked on a big project at the Basilica of San Francisco el Grande, Madrid. He collaborated with other artists like Casto Plasencia, Salvador Martínez Cubells, and Manuel Domínguez Sánchez.

He also painted large wall murals, called frescoes, in a chapel at the church of San Antonio de Padua, Aranjuez. Jover y Casanova even bought the old ruins of the Real monasterio de Nuestra Señora de Fresdelval [es]. He planned to help restore these historic ruins.

Sadly, when he passed away, some of his large paintings were not finished. One big canvas called "Represalias" (Retaliation) was incomplete. His friend, the famous painter Joaquín Sorolla, finished some of these works as Jover y Casanova had wished.
