Muro de Alcoy (pronounced "MOO-roh day al-KOY") or Muro d'Alcoi (pronounced "MOOR dal-KOY") is a lovely town and municipality in Spain. It's often just called Muro. This town is located in the province of Alicante, which is part of the Valencian Community. You can find it nestled at the foot of the Serra de Mariola mountains.
As of 2009, about 8,900 people lived in Muro de Alcoy. The town's economy is built on several important industries. These include making textile products, creating things from plastic, and building furniture. Agriculture is also a big part of life here, with many olive and almond trees growing in the area.
Fun Festivals
One of the most exciting events in Muro de Alcoy is the Moros i cristians festival. This special celebration takes place during the second weekend of May each year. It's a very old tradition that remembers battles between Moors (Muslims) and Christians. These battles happened a long time ago, from the 8th to the 15th centuries, during a period called the Reconquista.
The festival shows how the Moors once captured the city. Then, it shows how the Christians later won it back. People dress up in amazing costumes and put on parades and mock battles. It's a colorful and lively way to learn about history!
