Francisco Villaespesa Martín (born October 14, 1877 – died April 9, 1936) was an important Spanish writer. He was born in Láujar de Andarax, a town in the Province of Almería, Spain. This place was very important to him throughout his life. Many people think he is the most famous writer from that province. Because of this, libraries in both the main city and his hometown are named after him.

Francisco Villaespesa wrote many poems and books during his life. He published more than 50 books of poetry, and he also wrote some poems that were never printed.

Early Writings and New Styles

His first books, Intimidades (published in 1898) and Luchas (published in 1899), followed a style called Romanticism. Romanticism in writing often focuses on feelings, imagination, and nature.

At the start of the 1900s, Francisco Villaespesa began to use a new style called Modernism. His book La copa del Rey Thule (published in 1900) is a good example of this change. Modernism was a movement that tried new ways of writing and expressing ideas.

From 1906 onwards, his work also started to show an Orientalist style. This means he included ideas and images inspired by cultures from the East. He also helped write for a special magazine called Prometeo. This magazine was published in Madrid between 1908 and 1912 and was known for its new and exciting ideas.
