Francisco de Navarra y Hualde (born 1498, died 1563) was an important leader in the Catholic Church in Spain. He served as an Archbishop in Valencia and a Bishop in other cities during the time of Emperor Charles V. He held these important roles from 1542 until his death in 1563.

Biography

Early Life and Challenges

Francisco de Navarra y Hualde was born in 1498 in a town called Tafalla. This town is located in the Kingdom of Navarre, a historical region in what is now Spain. His father was Pedro, Marshal of Navarre, a high-ranking military leader.

When Francisco was young, Navarre faced a lot of changes. There was a period when Spain took control of Navarre. During a big battle called the Siege of Hondarribia (from 1522 to 1524), Francisco and his brother were listed as loyal to Navarre.

Eventually, Emperor Charles V offered a general pardon to many people. After this, Francisco was appointed as the prior of Roncesvalles. A prior is a leader in a religious community, similar to a head of a monastery.

Church Career and Important Roles

Francisco de Navarra y Hualde began his journey as a bishop in 1542. On May 22, Pope Paul III chose him to be the Bishop of Ciudad Rodrigo. This was his first major role in the church.

A few years later, on December 14, 1545, Pope Paul III appointed him again. This time, he became the Bishop of Badajoz. He served in this role for many years.

His most important appointment came on May 4, 1556. Pope Paul IV made him the Archbishop of Valencia. He officially started this new role on June 22, 1556. He continued to serve as Archbishop until he passed away on April 16, 1563.

During his time as a bishop, he also helped consecrate, or officially appoint, other church leaders. For example, he helped consecrate Tomás Garcia Martinez as the Archbishop of Valencia in 1544.

Defending Others

Francisco de Navarra y Hualde was known for standing up for what he believed was right. In 1558, he, along with another Navarrese scholar named Martin Azpilcueta, defended Bartolome Carranza. Carranza was facing charges from the Spanish Inquisition. The Inquisition was a powerful church court that investigated people for beliefs that were considered wrong. Francisco de Navarra y Hualde bravely defended Carranza against these accusations and the wishes of King Philip II.
