Francisco de Robles was an important bookseller and publisher in Madrid, Spain. His shop was located near a famous gate called the Puerta de Guadalajara. He is best known for publishing some of the most famous books by Miguel de Cervantes.

A Famous Publisher

Francisco de Robles published the very first editions of two of Cervantes' most well-known books. These were Don Quixote (published in 1605) and the Exemplary Novels (published in 1613). Don Quixote is one of the most famous novels ever written.

To print Don Quixote, Robles worked with a printer named Juan de la Cuesta. The printing happened at Cuesta's shop at Atocha 87 in Madrid. Today, this building is a museum and cultural center. It is also home to the Sociedad Cervantina, a group dedicated to Cervantes.

Family Connections

Francisco de Robles had a close relationship with the printer Juan de la Cuesta. Robles was the godfather to Cuesta's two children. This shows they were not just business partners but also friends.

Francisco's father, Blas de Robles, was also a publisher. Before Francisco moved to Madrid, his father published Cervantes' book La Galatea. This happened in 1585 in Alcalá de Henares, a town near Madrid. Blas de Robles paid Cervantes 336 reales for the book's copyright. A copyright is like a special permission. It means only the publisher can print and sell the book.
