Francisco de Valdez (Cornelis de Visscher II, 1649)

Francisco Valdez (born around 1522, died around 1580) was an important Spanish general. He played a big role during a long conflict called the Eighty Years War. He was in charge of the Spanish soldiers who tried to capture the city of Leiden in 1573. He also led a failed attack on the city of Delft in the same year.

Early Life and Military Career

Francisco Valdez was born into a peasant family, which means his family were farmers and not from a noble background. Despite this, he became a soldier and served the powerful ruler Emperor Charles V.

Serving Emperor Charles V

In 1546, Valdez fought for Emperor Charles V in a war against Protestant groups in the Holy Roman Empire. These groups had different religious beliefs from the main church. Later, in 1550, he led a military trip to Tunis, a city in North Africa.

Joining the Dutch Revolt

In 1567, Valdez traveled to the Netherlands with a famous Spanish leader, the Duke of Alva. Their mission was to help Philip II of Spain, the King of Spain, regain control of the Netherlands. This was at the start of the Dutch Revolt, a time when the Dutch people were fighting for their freedom from Spanish rule.

Personal Life

In 1574, Francisco Valdez married a woman named Magdalena Moons.
