Early Life and Political Beginnings
Franco Maria Malfatti was born in Rome, Italy. His parents came from the Rieti area. He became a key member of the Christian Democratic party in Italy. This party was called Democrazia Cristiana in Italian. He rose to become the chief of their political office. He also held many important government roles.
In the Christian Democratic party, he was part of a group led by Dossetti. Other famous politicians like Amintore Fanfani and Aldo Moro were also in this group. In 1951, he was chosen as a national leader for young members of the party. In 1958, he was elected as a deputy. This meant he represented the Rieti and Umbria areas in the Italian parliament.
Serving as a Minister in Italy
Malfatti held many different minister positions in the Italian government. He was the Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1979 to 1980. He also served as the Minister of Finance from 1978 to 1979. Before that, he was the Minister of Education for several years. He also worked as the Minister for Industry, State Holdings, and Telecommunications. These roles showed his wide range of experience in government.
Leading the European Commission
One of Malfatti's most important roles was being the third President of the European Commission. He held this position from 1970 to 1972. The European Commission is like the executive branch of the European Union. It helps manage how European countries work together.
During his time as president, the "Malfatti Commission" helped restart the process of European cooperation. They created a financial plan for the European Community. They also worked to complete the single market, making trade easier between member countries. There were also early steps towards political and money cooperation. Important talks began to allow new countries to join. These countries included Denmark, Ireland, Norway, and the United Kingdom.
Malfatti resigned from his role as President of the European Commission in 1972. He did this to return to Italy and run for office there.
Later Career and Influence
In the 1980s, Malfatti led the Italian group in the European Parliament. He was politically close to Aldo Moro, another influential Italian politician. Malfatti also took part in the Bilderberg meetings. These are private meetings where important people from politics, business, and media discuss global issues.
