The Franconia Range is a cool group of mountains in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, USA. It's the second tallest mountain range in the White Mountains, right after the Presidential Range. The most famous part is Franconia Ridge. This is a long, high path that connects all the main mountain tops in the range.

Exploring the Franconia Range
The Franconia Range is a popular spot for outdoor adventures. It offers amazing views and challenging hikes. Many people visit to experience its unique natural features.
Major Mountain Peaks
Here are the highest mountain tops in the Franconia Range, listed from north to south:
- Mount Lafayette (5,249 feet (1,600 m))
- Mount Truman (5,000 feet (1,500 m))
- Mount Lincoln (5,089 feet (1,551 m))
- Little Haystack Mountain (4,780 feet (1,460 m))
- Mount Liberty (4,459 feet (1,359 m))
- Mount Flume (4,328 feet (1,319 m))
Some of these peaks are part of a special list. The Appalachian Mountain Club keeps a list of "Four-thousand footers" in New Hampshire. These are mountains that are at least 4,000 feet (about 1,219 meters) tall.
Unique Natural Features
The Franconia Range has a large area of alpine tundra. This is a special kind of treeless land found at high elevations. It's like a mini-Arctic right here in the mountains! This area is the third largest of its kind in the eastern United States. Only the Presidential Range and the Katahdin area have more.
About 2.5 miles (4.0 km) of the ridge is in this alpine zone. This means you can walk above the treeline for a long stretch. From here, you get amazing 360-degree views of the White Mountains. To the east, you can see the wild and untouched Pemigewasset Wilderness. Even though Mount Liberty and Mount Flume are mostly covered in trees, their very tops poke out. This gives you great views from their summits too.
Hiking Adventures
The Franconia Ridge Trail is a famous path that goes along the top of the ridge. It even joins up with the longer Appalachian Trail for a section. This trail connects many of the mountains mentioned earlier.
One popular hike is the Franconia Ridge Loop. This 8.9 miles (14.3 km) loop takes you over Little Haystack Mountain, Mount Lincoln, and Mount Lafayette. It's a tough hike, but very rewarding! You'll climb over 3,900 feet (1,200 m) in total elevation. This means you'll gain a lot of height over the whole trip.
Staying Safe on the Ridge
Hiking on Franconia Ridge can be challenging. The weather in the White Mountains can change very quickly. Since the ridge is open and exposed, hikers need to be prepared. It's important to dress in layers and carry enough supplies. Always check the weather forecast before you go. Being prepared helps keep everyone safe while enjoying the beautiful mountains.
