The Story of Frank's RedHot
How It All Started
The Frank Tea and Spice Company began in 1896 in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1917, the owner, Jacob Frank, made a deal with the Estilette Pepper Farm in Louisiana. There, Adam Estilette and Jacob Frank became business partners. They mixed different spices, vinegar, garlic, and cayenne peppers. They then let this mixture age, which created the first Frank's RedHot sauce. This original sauce was first sold in 1920.
Frank's RedHot and Buffalo Wings
Frank's RedHot is a key ingredient in many recipes for Buffalo wings. These are chicken wings covered in a spicy sauce. Even though it's very popular for Buffalo wings today, it probably wasn't the exact hot sauce used in the very first Buffalo wing recipe. That famous recipe was created in 1964 at the Anchor Bar.
Who Owns Frank's RedHot?
Over the years, Frank's RedHot has had a few different owners. In 1977, it was sold to Durkee Famous Foods. Later, in 1995, it became part of Reckitt Benckiser. Then, in August 2017, a big spice company called McCormick & Company bought Frank's RedHot sauce. They also bought French's mustard in the same deal. Today, Frank's RedHot is made in Springfield, Missouri.
Other Frank's RedHot Products
In 2007, a company called Thanasi Foods started making snacks with Frank's RedHot flavor. These included beef jerky and other meat snacks.
Fun Advertisements
Frank's RedHot is famous for its funny TV commercials. These ads often show an older woman named Ethel. She is usually explaining how she uses Frank's RedHot on all sorts of foods. In these ads, she often says a funny phrase about putting the sauce on everything. The words are always bleeped out, and her mouth is covered with a "splat" graphic. This makes the commercials memorable and humorous.
