The Fiery Facts: How Hot Is It?
Frank's RedHot comes in different levels of spiciness. The original sauce is not super hot. It has a rating of 450 on the Scoville scale. This scale measures how spicy peppers and sauces are.
However, if you like things much hotter, there's also an XTRA Hot version. This one measures 2,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHUs). That's a lot spicier than the original!
A Spicy Story: The History of Frank's RedHot
The story of Frank's RedHot began a long time ago. The Frank Tea and Spice Company started in 1896 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
How the Sauce Was Born
In 1917, the company's owner, Jacob Frank, teamed up with Adam Estilette. Adam owned a pepper farm in Louisiana. Together, they mixed different spices, vinegar, garlic, and cayenne peppers. They let this mixture age, which means it sat for a while to develop its flavor.
This special blend became the original Frank's RedHot sauce. It first went on sale in 1920.
Frank's and Buffalo Wings
Frank's RedHot is a main ingredient in many recipes for Buffalo wings. These wings are a very popular dish. However, the sauce used in the very first Buffalo wing recipe, made in 1964 at the Anchor Bar, was probably not Frank's RedHot.
Changes in Ownership
Over the years, Frank's RedHot has been owned by different companies. In 1977, Durkee Famous Foods bought the brand. Later, in 1995, Reckitt Benckiser became the owner. They owned it until 2017.
Today, Frank's RedHot is made in Springfield, Missouri. In 2007, a company called Thanasi Foods started making beef jerky and meat snacks with Frank's RedHot flavor. Then, in August 2017, McCormick & Company, a big spice company, bought Frank's RedHot sauce.
Funny Ads: "I Put That S*** on Everything!"
Frank's RedHot is also famous for its funny TV commercials. These ads often show an older woman named Ethel. She is usually explaining how she uses Frank's RedHot on all sorts of foods.
In the ads, Ethel is often in front of important people, like the Queen. She then says a funny phrase: "I put that s*** on everything." The bad word is always bleeped out, and a "splat" graphic covers her mouth. This makes the commercials even funnier and more memorable.
