Frank Charles Barnaby (born September 27, 1927 – died August 1, 2020) was a British scientist. He was an expert on nuclear issues and military technology. He wrote many books and articles about these topics.

Frank Barnaby was born in Andover, Hampshire, England. He went to Andover Grammar School and the University of London.

Early Career and Nuclear Physics

Barnaby trained as a nuclear physicist. This means he studied the tiny parts that make up atoms. From 1951 to 1957, he worked at the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment in Aldermaston. This place researched nuclear weapons.

Later, he worked for the Medical Research Council (UK). He was also a lecturer at University College London from 1957 to 1967.

Working for Peace and Disarmament

Frank Barnaby was very involved in trying to make the world safer. He worked with important groups that focused on peace and stopping the spread of weapons.

From 1971 to 1981, he was the Director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). SIPRI is a group that studies conflicts, weapons, and arms control. They aim to help people understand how to achieve peace.

In 1981, he helped start the World Cultural Council. This group promotes values like tolerance and understanding. He also taught as a professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the University of Minnesota.

Barnaby was also the Executive Secretary of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs. This group brings together scientists and public figures. They discuss how to reduce the danger of armed conflict. They also talk about finding solutions to global security threats.

Personal Life

Frank Barnaby was married and had a son and a daughter. He passed away on August 1, 2020, at the age of 92.
