Frank Collindridge
Frank Collindridge was a politician from Barnsley.

Frank Collindridge was an important politician in the United Kingdom. He was born in 1891 and passed away in 1951. He was a member of the Labour Party, a major political group in Britain.

Early Life and Work

Frank Collindridge was born in a town called Barnsley. When he grew up, he became a coal miner. Coal miners work underground to dig for coal, which was a very important fuel at the time.

He cared a lot about the rights of miners. He became very active in the Miners' Federation of Great Britain (MFGB). This group worked to improve conditions and pay for miners. Frank also joined the Labour Party, which often supported working people.

Local Politics and Travel

From 1920 to 1939, Frank Collindridge served on the Wombwell Urban District Council. This council helped manage local services and decisions for the Wombwell area. He was even the leader, or "chair," of the council for a year in 1931-1932.

His work with the Miners' Federation also took him on important trips. In 1937, he visited the Soviet Union. Later, in 1944, he traveled all the way to Australia and New Zealand. These trips were part of his efforts to connect with and support workers internationally.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

In 1938, Frank Collindridge was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for his hometown, Barnsley. An MP is a person elected by people in their area to represent them in the country's main government, the Parliament. He won his seat in a special election called a by-election.

He continued to represent Barnsley in Parliament until he passed away. Sadly, he died in 1951 at the age of 60 while campaigning for the next general election.

Role in Government

After World War II, the Labour Party formed the government under Prime Minister Clement Attlee. Frank Collindridge played an important role in this government.

He served as a government whip. A whip is like a team manager in politics. Their job is to make sure that members of their party vote together on important issues.

Frank held two important titles as a whip:

  • He was a Lord of the Treasury from 1945 to 1946. This role involved helping with government finances.
  • He then became the Comptroller of the Household from 1946 to 1951. This job involved managing the royal household's expenses and acting as a link between the government and the Royal Family.

Frank Collindridge dedicated his life to public service, starting as a miner and rising to an important position in the UK government.
