Wombwell is a town in South Yorkshire, England. It is part of the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley. In 2011, about 15,316 people lived here. Wombwell's name might mean "Womba's Well." This suggests it was a well located in a hollow area.

A Look Back at Wombwell's Past
Wombwell has a rich history. It was once an important area for coal mining. The town had two large coal mines called collieries. These were Wombwell Main and Mitchells Main.
Railways and Transport
The town has a railway station called Wombwell railway station. It connects Wombwell to other places like Penistone and Hallam. There used to be another station, Wombwell Central. It closed in 1959 when its passenger service stopped.
Local Government and Buildings
From 1865 to 1974, Wombwell had its own local council. This council helped manage the town. The beautiful Old Town Hall was finished in 1897. It was an important building for the town's administration.
Cemetery and Community
Wombwell has a main cemetery. A group of volunteers called the Friends of Wombwell Cemetery take care of it. There are two old chapels in the cemetery. One chapel was turned into a "Peace Garden" after a fire. The other has been fixed up to be a "community hub."
The 2007 Floods
In 2007, parts of Wombwell were affected by floods. The River Dove overflowed its banks. This happened on June 15th and again on June 25th. Many homes and businesses were flooded during this time.

- Kings Oak Primary Learning Centre started in 2007. It was formed by joining Kings Road Infant School and Oakfield Junior School.
- High View Primary Learning Centre also began in 2007. It combined Highfields Junior School and Wood View Infant School.
- Park Street Primary Learning Centre is another primary school in the area.

Wombwell has a strong history in sports, especially football.
Football Teams
Over the years, Wombwell has had many football teams:
- Wombwell Town (I) was the first team to play in the FA Cup in 1896. They won the first Yorkshire League in 1899.
- Wombwell Rising Star F.C. played in the FA Cup once in 1904.
- Wombwell F.C. was formed in 1920. They played in the Midland League and reached the first round of the FA Cup in 1930. The team stopped playing in 1934.
- Wombwell Town (II) won the Yorkshire League three times. This team stopped playing in 2000. It was also known as Wombwell Athletic and Wombwell & Darfield.
- Wombwell Town F.C. was formed in 2018. They play at the Recreation Ground on Station Road. They compete in the Northern Counties East League.
- Wombwell Main F.C. currently plays in the Sheffield & Hallamshire County Senior League.

- The South Yorkshire Sports Stadium was open from 1928 to 1965. It hosted greyhound racing and speedway motorcycle races.
