Yorkshire and the Humber facts for kids
Yorkshire and the Humber is one of the nine main regions of England. It covers most of the historic area known as Yorkshire. It also includes a part of northern Lincolnshire that used to be in a place called Humberside between 1974 and 1996.
The highest point in this region is Whernside, which is in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. It stands tall at 737 metres (about 2,418 feet). The biggest natural freshwater lake here is Hornsea Mere, located in the East Riding of Yorkshire.
In 2005, about 5,854,357 people lived in Yorkshire and the Humber.
What Makes Up Yorkshire and the Humber?
The region of Yorkshire and the Humber is divided into different areas for local government. These areas help manage things like schools, roads, and local services.
The main parts of the region include:
- South Yorkshire, which has cities like Sheffield and Doncaster.
- West Yorkshire, home to big cities such as Leeds and Bradford.
- A part of North Yorkshire, which includes areas like Scarborough and the historic city of York.
- The East Riding of Yorkshire, which includes the city of Kingston upon Hull.
- Parts of Lincolnshire, specifically North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire.
This region was first known as Yorkshire and Humberside. It was made up of North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, and Humberside.
