Frank Edward Stubbs (born March 12, 1888 – died April 25, 1915) was a brave English soldier. He received the Victoria Cross. This is the highest award for amazing courage. It's given to British and Commonwealth soldiers for bravery when facing the enemy.
Stubbs was 27 years old during the First World War. He was a sergeant in the 1st Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers, part of the British Army.
A Hero at Gallipoli
On April 25, 1915, Sergeant Stubbs was part of a major landing operation. This took place at a place called W Beach in Cape Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey. During this landing, he was sadly killed in action.
The "Six VCs Before Breakfast"
Frank Stubbs was one of six soldiers from his regiment who received the Victoria Cross for their bravery that day. The soldiers who survived the landing chose these six men for the award.
The newspapers called these brave acts "six VCs before breakfast." General Ian Hamilton, who led the Allied troops at Gallipoli, was so impressed. He ordered that W Beach be renamed "Lancashire Landing" to honor their courage.
The other five soldiers who received the Victoria Cross alongside Stubbs were:
- Cuthbert Bromley
- John Elisha Grimshaw
- William Kenealy
- Alfred Joseph Richards
- Richard Raymond Willis
