Franklin Lindsay Forbes (born March 30, 1891 – died August 19, 1983) was an American athlete. He played baseball in the Negro leagues as an infielder. He also became a well-known coach for both American football and basketball.

Frank Forbes's Early Life and Baseball Career

Franklin Forbes was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was sometimes called "Joe" Forbes. He also had the nickname "Strangler."

Playing Baseball in the Negro Leagues

Forbes started his baseball career at age 22. He played for his hometown team, the Philadelphia Giants. He was an infielder, meaning he played positions like first base, second base, third base, or shortstop.

After playing for the Philadelphia Giants, he joined other teams. These included the Lincoln Stars and the Lincoln Giants in New York. He played for these teams for several years. Later, he returned to Pennsylvania to play.

His final team was the Atlantic City Bacharach Giants in 1919. He played in the Negro leagues before the first official Negro National League was formed in 1920.

Life During World War I

In 1917, when he was 26 years old, Forbes registered for the World War I draft. He worked as a porter for the Pennsylvania Railroad. A porter is someone who carries luggage or provides services, often on trains.

Coaching Career at Morehouse College

After his baseball career, Frank Forbes became a successful coach. He coached at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. Morehouse College is a historically Black men's college.

Coaching Football

Forbes was the head football coach at Morehouse College for three different periods. He coached from 1932 to 1933, then from 1935 to 1942, and again from 1945 to 1949. His football teams were known as the Morehouse Maroon Tigers.

Coaching Basketball

He also coached basketball at Morehouse College. He led the Morehouse Maroon Tigers basketball team for many years. His coaching career in basketball spanned from 1932 to 1934, 1935 to 1943, and 1945 to 1964.

Forbes Arena: A Lasting Legacy

Morehouse College honored Frank Forbes for his contributions. They named their sports arena after him. It is called Forbes Arena. This arena is a place where many sports events are held.

Later Life and Legacy

Frank Forbes passed away in 1983 at the age of 92. He died in his hometown of Philadelphia. He is remembered as an important figure in both baseball and college sports coaching.
