Frank Lee Pyman (born April 8, 1882 – died January 1, 1944) was an important English chemist. He worked as a scientist in universities and for big companies. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society, which is a special honor for top scientists.

Early Life and Education

Frank Lee Pyman was born in a town called Malvern, Worcestershire in England. He was the oldest son of Frank Pyman and Florence Lee. His grandfather, Henry Lee, was a Member of Parliament for Southampton.

Frank Pyman loved to learn about science. He went to the University of Manchester. In 1902, he earned his PhD, which is a very high degree in a specific subject.

Studying Abroad

After his studies in England, Pyman traveled to Switzerland. He worked with another famous scientist, Eugen Bamberger, at the Zürich Polytechnic. This experience helped him learn even more about chemistry.

A Career in Chemistry

When Frank Pyman came back to England, he started his career. He first worked with a research group. But soon, he found a better opportunity.

Working at Wellcome Chemical Works

In 1905, Pyman joined a company called Wellcome Chemical Works. This company is now known as GlaxoSmithKline. He worked in Dartford, where he helped develop new chemicals and medicines.

Becoming a Professor

After working in industry, Pyman decided to go back to university. In 1919, he became a professor at the University of Manchester. He taught organic chemistry, which is the study of chemicals found in living things. He was in charge of the organic chemistry department.

Leading Research at Boots

Pyman enjoyed doing research more than administration. So, in 1927, he joined Boots Pure Drug Co., Ltd. in Nottingham. This was a big company that made medicines and health products.

He became the Head of the Research Department at Boots. This meant he led all the new science projects. In 1929, he was made a Director of the company. He held this important position until he passed away.

Frank Lee Pyman died in 1944 at the age of 61. He had been ill for some time. He made many important contributions to chemistry during his life.
