Frank William George Lloyd (born February 2, 1886 – died August 10, 1960) was a famous film director, actor, writer, and producer. He was born in Scotland but became an American citizen. Frank Lloyd was one of the people who helped start the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He even served as its president for a year, from 1934 to 1935.

A Life in Film
Frank Lloyd was born in Glasgow, Scotland. His mother was Scottish, and his father was Welsh. He began his career in London as a singer and stage actor.
Frank Lloyd made history as the first person from Scotland to win an Academy Award, also known as an Oscar. In 1929, he was nominated for three Oscars for directing different types of films:
- The Divine Lady (a silent film, meaning no spoken dialogue)
- Weary River (a part-talkie, with some spoken parts)
- Drag (a full talkie, with all spoken dialogue)
He won the Oscar for The Divine Lady.
He won another Oscar in 1933 for directing Cavalcade. In 1935, he received another nomination for Best Director for one of his most successful films, Mutiny on the Bounty. Frank Lloyd is also known for being one of the founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.
In 1957, he received the George Eastman Award. This award is given by the George Eastman Museum to people who have made important contributions to the art of film.
On February 8, 1960, Frank Lloyd was honored with a star on the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame. His star is located at 6667 Hollywood Boulevard, recognizing his great work in the movie industry.
Family Life
Frank Lloyd was married to an actress named Alma Haller. They were married on July 11, 1913, and stayed together until her death on March 16, 1952. Later, in 1955, Lloyd married Virginia Kellogg. They remained married until Frank Lloyd passed away on August 10, 1960, at the age of 74. He was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park (Glendale) in Glendale, California.
