Frank Manley Warren Sr. (born May 10, 1848 – died April 15, 1912) was an important American businessman. He was from Oregon and became rich in the salmon canning business. The town of Warrendale, Oregon, where one of his canneries was, is named after him. He died when the famous ship Titanic sank.

Frank Warren's Life Story

Frank Warren was born in Ellsworth, Maine, on May 10, 1848. When he was three, his family moved to the Oregon Territory. They lived on a special land grant called a donation land claim in Rainier, Oregon. His father, Francis Warren, was part of the Oregon Territorial Legislature in 1857.

When Frank was nine, his family moved to Portland. At age 15, he worked for Wells Fargo. He also worked for Ladd & Tilton Bank. In 1866, Frank was a member of The Pioneer Base Ball Club.

Starting a Business

Frank Warren started the Warren Packing Company. This business canned salmon. He was seen as a leader in the salmon canning industry on the Columbia River. He built his first cannery in Cathlamet, Washington, in 1869. Later, he built another cannery in Warrendale. This site also had a state fish hatchery in the late 1880s.

In 1872, Warren married Anna Sophia Atkinson. Her father, George H. Atkinson, was a pioneer missionary. Frank and Anna had four children: Frank, Frances, George, and Anna.

The Warren family were active members of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Portland. Their support helped the church get land and build its main building. Frank Warren was also on the board of trustees for Pacific University. Anna's father had helped start this university. By the time the Titanic sank, people said Frank Warren was a millionaire.

The Titanic Disaster

Frank and Anna Warren boarded the Titanic in Cherbourg. They were traveling in first class. They were coming home from a three-month trip to Europe. This trip celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. They were the only first-class passengers from Oregon on the ship.

Anna Warren survived the sinking of the Titanic on April 15, 1912. Frank Warren helped her get onto a lifeboat. Then he stepped back onto the ship. If Frank Warren's body was found, it was never identified. A story about Anna's experience was printed in The Morning Oregonian newspaper on April 27, 1912.

Remembering Frank Warren

There is a cenotaph for Frank Warren in River View Cemetery in Portland. A cenotaph is a monument for someone buried elsewhere. Anna died in 1925 and is buried in the same cemetery. An Oregonian article said that Anna had poor health after the Titanic disaster.

Frank Warren's son, Frank M. Warren Jr. (1876–1947), also worked in the salmon packing business. He was president of the Port of Portland. He was also a director for Portland General Electric. He served on the Oregon State Fish Commission. Frank Warren's other son, George, also worked for the Warren Packing Company.

Warren Family Homes

Francis Warren's house was in downtown Portland. Today, a parking garage for the Heathman Hotel is on that spot. His son Frank's home was right next door.

Frank Warren Sr. also owned a house now known as the George Earle Chamberlain House. It was built in 1893. Governor George Earle Chamberlain bought this house in 1904.

Later, Frank Warren Sr. moved to a home designed by Whidden & Lewis. This house was in Portland's West Hills. Anna was living there when she died. Another house, the Frank M. Warren House, is now a bed and breakfast. It was designed by Joseph Jacobberger and built in 1904 for Frank Warren Jr.
