Frank Youell Field was a football stadium in Oakland, California. It was the home field for the Oakland Raiders football team. The Raiders played there for four seasons, from 1962 to 1965.

The stadium was built as a temporary home. It was used while a bigger stadium, the Oakland–Alameda County Coliseum, was being built. Frank Youell Field could hold 22,000 fans. It cost about $400,000 to build. The stadium was named after Francis J. Youell. He was an important person in Oakland, serving on the city council and supporting local sports.

Frank Youell Field: A Temporary Home for Football

Frank Youell Field was a special place for football fans in Oakland. It gave the Raiders a home while their permanent stadium was under construction. This temporary stadium played an important role in the team's early history.

Where Was It Located?

The stadium was located at 900 Fallon Street in Oakland. Today, this area is part of Laney College. It was right next to a channel connecting Lake Merritt to the Oakland Estuary. The land where the stadium stood had a history. It was once part of a housing project called "Auditorium Village." This project provided homes for many workers during World War II. These workers came to the San Francisco Bay Area to help with war efforts, especially in shipyards.

The Raiders' Time at Frank Youell Field

Before Frank Youell Field, the Raiders played in San Francisco. They used Kezar Stadium and Candlestick Park for their home games. Frank Youell Field became their first home stadium in Oakland.

First and Last Games

The Raiders played their very first regular season game at Frank Youell Field in 1962. It was on September 9 against the New York Titans. The Raiders lost that game 28–17. This was the start of a tough season with many losses. The final game at the stadium was in December 1965. It was also against a New York team, now called the Jets. The Raiders won that last game 24–14.

What Happened to the Stadium?

After the Raiders moved to the Coliseum in 1966, Frank Youell Field was still used. It hosted some high school football games for a few years. However, the stadium was torn down in 1969. This made space for more parking at Laney College.
