Frank Youell Field: A Temporary Home for Football
Frank Youell Field was built as a temporary place for the Oakland Raiders to play. It was used while a much larger stadium, the Oakland Alameda Coliseum, was being constructed. The stadium could hold 22,000 people. It cost about $400,000 to build, which was a lot of money back then.
Who Was Frank Youell?
The stadium was named after Francis J. Youell. He lived from 1883 to 1967. Mr. Youell was a local businessman in Oakland. He owned a funeral home called the Chapel of the Oaks. He was also a member of the Oakland City Council. Besides his work, he was a big supporter of sports in the community.
Where Was the Stadium Located?
Frank Youell Field was located at 900 Fallon Street in Oakland. Today, this area is part of Laney College. It was right next to a channel that connects Lake Merritt to the Oakland Estuary. It was also close to the Nimitz Freeway. Before the stadium was built, the land was part of a housing project. This project provided temporary homes for workers during World War II. Many people moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to work in factories and shipyards during the war.
The Raiders' Time at Frank Youell Field
Before playing at Frank Youell Field, the Raiders played their home games in San Francisco. They played at Kezar Stadium in 1960 and Candlestick Park in 1960 and 1961.
The Raiders played their very first regular season game at Frank Youell Field on September 9, 1962. They played against the New York Titans. The Raiders lost that game 28–17. This was the first of thirteen losses in a row that season. The last game played at the stadium was in December 1965. It was also against the New York team, which had been renamed the New York Jets. The Raiders won that final game 24–14.
What Happened to the Stadium?
After the Raiders moved to the Oakland Alameda Coliseum in 1966, Frank Youell Field was still used for a few years. It hosted some high school football games. However, in 1969, the stadium was torn down. The land was then used to create extra parking spaces for Laney College.
