Franklinville is a small village located in Cattaraugus County, New York, in the United States. In 2020, about 1,652 people lived here. The community was named after William Temple Franklin. He was an agent for the Holland Land Company and the grandson of Benjamin Franklin, a famous Founding Father of the U.S. Franklinville is in the northeast part of the larger Town of Franklinville.

A Look Back in Time

Franklinville started around 1806. At that time, the area was called "Ischua." The village of Franklinville officially became a village in 1874.

The main part of the village is special because it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This area is known as the Park Square Historic District. Another important building, the Simeon B. Robbins House, is also on this list.

Franklinville is located at 42°20′13″N 078°27′29″W / 42.33694°N 78.45806°W / 42.33694; -78.45806. It sits about 1,591 feet (485 meters) above sea level.

The village covers a total area of about 1.10 square miles (2.85 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

Franklinville is in the Ischua Valley. The Ischua Creek flows along the west side of the village. This creek is part of the Allegheny River watershed. Other creeks, like Gates Creek and Saunders Creek, also join Ischua Creek nearby. A small lake southeast of the village was formed by a dam on Gates Creek.

Several important roads meet in Franklinville. These include NY-16 and NY-98. Other local roads, like County Roads 17, 24, 46, and 69, also lead to the village.

Education

Franklinville is home to Ten Broeck Academy and Franklinville Central School. They are located on North Main Street.

The Ten Broeck Academy was started in 1867 by Peter Ten Broeck. He was a successful farmer and a county judge. He left money in his will to build an academy. This academy would provide free high school education. This was special because, at the time, many students could not continue their education past eighth grade. The academy later became part of the Franklinville public school system. The stone foundation of the original academy building is still part of the current high school.
