Franny Reese State Park is a beautiful state park located in Ulster County, New York. It covers about 251 acres, which is a lot of space to explore! This park is managed by a group called Scenic Hudson and is part of the larger Palisades Interstate Park system.

Park History and Naming

From Estate to Park Land

The land that is now Franny Reese State Park was once a large estate. It was called "Cedar Glen." This estate was built in the middle of the 1800s. A person named Charles H. Roberts owned it. He was known for making dentistry less painful.

After Roberts passed away, the estate started to fall apart. His family members argued about who should own the property.

Saving the Land

In 2003, a non-profit group called Scenic Hudson bought the property. This group works to protect land along the Hudson River. Their goal is to save important natural areas.

The land officially opened as a state park in 2009. This happened after the land was given to the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. Even though the state owns it, Scenic Hudson still helps manage the park.

Who Was Franny Reese?

The park is named after a special environmentalist. Her name was Frances "Franny" Reese (1917-2003). She worked very hard to protect lands in the Hudson River area. Naming the park after her honors her efforts to save nature.
