Franz Hartmann (born November 22, 1838, in Donauwörth – died August 7, 1912, in Kempten im Allgäu) was a German medical doctor. He was also a theosophist, which means he studied ancient wisdom and spiritual ideas. He was interested in occultism (hidden knowledge), geomancy (fortune-telling using patterns on the ground), and astrology (studying how stars and planets might affect life). He was also a writer.
Biography
Franz Hartmann worked closely with Helena Blavatsky, who helped start the Theosophical Society. He was even in charge of the Board of Control for the Theosophical Society Adyar. He also teamed up with another mystic, Carl Kellner.
Hartmann started his own magazines, Lotusblüthen (from 1893 to 1900) and Neue Lotusblüten (from 1908 to 1913). He wrote many articles about yoga, helping to make it popular in Germany.
Many people thought he was one of the most important writers about theosophy during his time. He wrote several books about spiritual studies and also biographies of famous thinkers like Jakob Böhme and Paracelsus. He translated an important Indian scripture called the Bhagavad Gita into German.
In 1896, he helped create a German branch of the Theosophical Society. He also supported the Guido-von-List-Society, which was another group interested in similar spiritual topics.
According to Theodor Reuss, Franz Hartmann was one of the first people to help create a special magical group. This group later became known as the Ordo Templi Orientis.
