François l'Hermite (born around 1601, died September 7, 1655) was a famous French writer. He was known by his pen name, Tristan l'Hermite. He wrote many plays and poems. He was born in a place called Château de Soliers in Haute Marche, France.

A Life Full of Adventures

Tristan l'Hermite had an exciting life from a young age. When he was just thirteen, he faced a difficult situation that made him leave France. He had to go to England for a while. He even wrote a funny novel about his early life called Page disgracie. This book tells stories about his childhood and youth.

He worked for several important people during his life. He was a poet for Gaston d'Orléans. Gaston was a duke and a brother to the king. Tristan also worked for the duchess of Chaulnes and the duke of Guise. These were powerful families in France.

His Famous Plays and Poems

Tristan l'Hermite wrote many plays. His first tragedy was called Marianne, which came out in 1636. Many people thought it was his best work. He also wrote other tragedies like Penthée (1637), La Mort de Seneque (1644), and La Mort de Crispe (1645). A tragedy is a type of play where the main characters face sad or terrible events.

He also wrote a play called The Parasite in 1654. Besides plays, he wrote many wonderful poems. Some of his best plays can still be found in a collection called Théâtre français from 1737.

Why the Name Tristan?

Tristan l'Hermite chose his special pen name from another person named Tristan l'Hermite. This older Tristan was a historical figure from the late Middle Ages. He was a marshal for King Louis XI of France. Our writer, François, used this name to write his works.

Tristan l'Hermite passed away on September 7, 1655. He died from a lung disease called tuberculosis.
