The Frasers of Strichen are an important part of the Clan Fraser of Lovat, a famous Scottish Highland clan. This family branch became the main leaders, or "chiefs," of the clan in the 1800s.

Becoming Clan Chiefs

For a long time, the Clan Fraser of Lovat had a main leader, known as the clan chief. In 1815, a man named Archibald Campbell Fraser of Lovat passed away. He was the third son of the 11th Lord Lovat. Since he didn't have any children, the leadership of the clan needed to go to someone else.

The role of clan chief then went to Thomas Alexander Fraser of Strichen. He was related to the 7th Lord Lovat, making him a direct descendant of the clan's earlier leaders.

The Title of Lord Lovat

In 1854, the special title of "Lord Lovat" was given back to Thomas Alexander Fraser. This meant he became the 12th Lord Lovat. This important title also gave him and his future family members a seat in the House of Lords. The House of Lords is a part of the United Kingdom's Parliament.

However, in 1999, a new law called the House of Lords Act 1999 changed things. It ended the right for most people who inherited their titles to automatically sit in the House of Lords.

The Current Clan Chief

Today, the chief of the Clan Fraser of Lovat is Simon Fraser, 16th Lord Lovat. He is a direct descendant of Thomas Alexander Fraser of Strichen. This means the Frasers of Strichen continue to lead the clan.
