Where is Fray Marcos?
Fray Marcos is located in the middle of Uruguay. It's about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) north of the Santa Lucía River. This river forms the border with the Canelones Department.
The town is also where two important roads meet: Route 7 and Route 94. It's about 96 kilometers (60 miles) north of Montevideo, which is the capital city of Uruguay. A train track also passes through Fray Marcos.
The Story of Fray Marcos
Fray Marcos was first started in December 1888. Later, on May 23, 1919, it was officially recognized as a "Pueblo," which means a village. This happened because of a special law called Ley Nº 6.906.
The town grew even more. On July 5, 1956, its status was changed again. It became a "Villa," which means a town. This change was made by another law, Ley Nº 12.297.

In 2011, the town of Fray Marcos had a population of 2,398 people. The number of people living in Fray Marcos has changed over the years. For example, in 1963, there were 1,403 residents. By 2004, the population had grown to 2,509 people.
