The Santa Lucía River (Spanish: Río Santa Lucía) is an important river in Uruguay. It provides drinking water for many people and helps farmers grow crops.

Where the River Flows

The Santa Lucía River starts in the Lavalleja area of Uruguay. As it flows, it forms the border between several different parts of the country. These include Florida and San José on one side, and Canelones and Montevideo on the other. The river eventually flows into the Río de la Plata. Here, it creates a small area with many channels, where Tiger Island is located.

Why the River is Important

This river is very important for southern Uruguay. It is the main source of drinking water for Montevideo, the capital city, and many other towns in the south. In 2017, it supplied drinking water to over 60% of Uruguay's population!

The river also flows through an important farming area in Uruguay. Farmers here grow crops like corn.

In 2013, a problem with tiny plants called algae made the drinking water taste and smell strange. This made people worried about the water's quality. Because of this, the government started a plan to check the water and try to keep it clean.

River Health and the Environment

Because the Santa Lucía River is in a big farming area, it sometimes faces environmental challenges. When farmers use fertilizers and other things on their crops, some of these can wash into the river. This is called nutrient runoff. Too many nutrients can cause too much algae to grow, which is called an algae bloom. This can harm the river's health. Studies have shown that pollution from farming, like phosphorus and nitrogen, has been higher than safe levels.

Since the 2013 algae bloom, local and national governments have been working with farmers. They encourage dairy farmers and others who raise animals to manage their waste better. This includes using special areas called settling basins to help clean the water before it goes into the river.
