Aguas Corrientes is a small town in southern Uruguay. It is located in the Canelones Department. The town's name means running waters. This name comes from the special water plant there.
This plant cleans water from the Santa Lucia River. This river is the biggest in Uruguay. It provides clean drinking water to many people. The town of Aguas Corrientes is also the name of the local government area it belongs to.

Where is Aguas Corrientes?
This town is easy to find on a map. It is about 13 kilometers from Canelones, the capital city of the department. Santa Lucia is only 7 kilometers away. The big city of Montevideo is about 56 kilometers from Aguas Corrientes. The Santa Lucia River flows along the northwest side of the town.
A Look at the Town's History
The Santa Lucia River was chosen for drinking water a long time ago. This was for the city of Montevideo. Work on the water treatment plant began in 1870. It opened on July 18, 1871. At first, British companies owned the plant. Later, in 1949, the government took it over.
The first people to live here were the plant workers and their families. A public school opened in 1882. On November 26, 1923, Aguas Corrientes was officially called a "Pueblo" (town). Later, on October 19, 1971, it became a "Villa" (village). Today, the area around the town is mostly farms. The town itself is a small center for shops and services that help the farming community.

In 2011, a count showed that 1,047 people lived in Aguas Corrientes. Many people in the town work at the OSE Water Treatment Plant. This plant is very important for the area.

Sports and Fun
Even though it's a small town, Aguas Corrientes has sports. It has its own football (soccer) club. There is also a yacht club. This club is perfect for enjoying the nearby Santa Lucia River.
