Fred Andrews (born May 4, 1952 – died December 20, 2021) was an American baseball player. He played as a second baseman in Major League Baseball (MLB). Fred was part of the Philadelphia Phillies team during the 1976 and 1977 seasons.

Fred Andrews' Baseball Journey

Fred Andrews was born in Lafayette, Louisiana. He went to high school in Lincoln Heights, Ohio. Fred was a talented player. The Philadelphia Phillies picked him in the 8th round of the 1970 MLB Draft. This meant they chose him to play for their team from many young players.

Playing in Major League Baseball

Fred Andrews started playing in the major leagues with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1976. That year, he played in four games. In 1977, he played in 12 more games.

During his two seasons in MLB, Fred played a total of 16 games. He had a batting average of .276. This means he got 8 hits out of 29 times he tried to hit the ball. He also scored 4 runs and had 2 RBI (Runs Batted In). An RBI means he helped a teammate score a run.

Playing Second Base

Fred was a great defensive player at second base. He handled 44 chances to make a play. This included 23 putouts and 21 assists. A putout is when a player gets an opponent out. An assist is when a player helps a teammate get an opponent out. Fred did all this without making any errors. This gave him a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.

Moving to a New Team

On March 24, 1978, Fred Andrews was traded. He went to the Mets organization. In exchange, the Phillies got another player named Bud Harrelson. Fred then played the 1978 season with the Tidewater Tides. This team was part of the AAA International League. AAA is a level of professional baseball below the major leagues.
