Fredric John Baur (born July 14, 1918 – died May 4, 2008) was an American scientist. He was an organic chemist and worked on keeping food fresh. He is most famous for inventing the special container for Pringles potato chips.

Baur also helped create new frying oils. He even worked on freeze-dried ice cream. This is the kind of ice cream astronauts eat in space!

The Pringles Can Inventor

Fred Baur designed the unique Pringles can. This tall, tube-shaped container keeps the chips safe. He also figured out how to stack the curved chips inside.

He applied for a patent for his design in 1966. A patent is like a special permission. It means no one else can copy his invention. The patent was officially given to him in 1971.

Fred Baur's Life and Work

Fred Baur was born in Toledo, Ohio. He studied at the University of Toledo. Later, he earned more degrees from Ohio State University.

He also served in the U.S. Navy. In the Navy, he worked as an aviation physiologist. This job involves studying how flying affects the human body. He lived in Cincinnati, Ohio, for many years.

A Unique Burial Request

Fred Baur passed away on May 4, 2008. He was 89 years old. Before he died, he made a special request. He wanted some of his ashes to be buried in a Pringles can.

His children honored his wish. They placed part of his ashes in an Original flavor Pringles container. This can was buried in his grave. The rest of his ashes were placed in a regular urn. Some were also given to one of his grandchildren.
