Fred Hill Sr. (born July 15, 1934 – died March 2, 2019) was a famous American coach in both football and baseball. He is best known for being the head baseball coach at Rutgers University for many years, from 1984 to 2013. During his time at Rutgers, his teams made it to the NCAA baseball tournament 13 times!
Before Rutgers, Hill was also a head coach for both baseball and football at Montclair State University. He had an amazing career, winning a total of 1,089 college baseball games.

Fred Hill's Coaching Journey
Fred Hill Sr. had a long and successful career helping young athletes. He coached at both high school and college levels. He was known for his dedication and for helping many players reach their full potential.
Coaching at Montclair State
Fred Hill Sr. was the head football coach at Montclair State University for seven seasons. His football teams had a great record of 52 wins, 16 losses, and 4 ties. They even won four titles in the New Jersey State Athletic Conference. In 1981, his team had their first-ever season with 10 wins!
He also coached the baseball team at Montclair State. In seven seasons, his baseball teams won 148 games, lost 91, and had 1 tie. Because of his success, Fred Hill Sr. was added to the Montclair State University Hall of Fame. His jersey number was also retired, which is a very special honor.
Coaching at Rutgers University
From 1984 to 2013, Fred Hill Sr. was the head baseball coach for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. He had an incredible record of 941 wins, 658 losses, and 7 ties just at Rutgers. Over his 30 years there, he helped 72 different players go on to play professional baseball.
When he announced his retirement before the 2014 season, his 1,089 career wins ranked him 11th in the history of college baseball. He was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Baseball Coach of the Year three times. He also won the Big East Conference Baseball Coach of the Year award once.
Later Coaching Years
After retiring from Rutgers, Fred Hill Sr. continued to share his knowledge.
Caldwell University
In 2015, Hill became an assistant coach for the Caldwell University Cougars baseball team. He stayed in this role for two seasons.
Kean University
In 2017, he joined the baseball staff at Kean University as an assistant coach. He continued coaching there until his passing in 2019.
Fred Hill's Family Life
Fred Hill Sr. lived in Verona, New Jersey with his wife, Evelyn, for over 50 years. They had six children: Nancy, Linda, Tracey, Karen, Jimmy, and Fred. He also had 12 grandchildren.
His son, Fred Hill Jr., followed in his footsteps and became the head men's basketball coach for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. His brother, Brian Hill, was also a coach, working as an assistant coach in the NBA for teams like the Detroit Pistons.
Fred Hill Sr. went to Clifford Scott High School in East Orange, New Jersey. He later graduated from Upsala College in 1957. Fred Hill Sr. passed away on March 2, 2019, at the age of 84.
