Frederick O'Neal Vinson (born January 28, 1971) is an American professional basketball coach and former player. He currently works as an assistant coach for the Detroit Pistons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). During his playing days, he was a guard who stood 6 ft 4 in (1.93 m) tall and weighed 190 lb (86 kg).

Early Life and College Basketball

Fred Vinson was born in Murfreesboro, North Carolina. He attended Chowan Junior College before moving on to Georgia Institute of Technology.

College Achievements

While playing for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Fred was a standout player. In the 1993–94 season, he was named the team's Most Valuable Player (MVP). He was also the third-highest scorer for his team that year. Fred was especially good at shooting from long range. He led the Yellow Jackets in three-point shots, making 70 of them. His three-point shooting percentage was also very impressive at .402.

Professional Playing Career

After college, Fred Vinson played for several professional basketball teams. He spent time in the NBA and other leagues.

NBA Experience

Fred played a few games in the NBA.

  • During the 1994–95 NBA season, he played five games with the Atlanta Hawks. He scored a total of four points for the team.
  • In the 1999–2000 NBA season, he played eight games for the Seattle SuperSonics. He averaged 1.6 points per game during his time with them.

Other Leagues

Besides the NBA, Fred Vinson also played in other professional leagues.

New Orleans Hornets / Pelicans

On August 4, 2010, Fred Vinson joined the New Orleans Hornets as an assistant coach. The team later changed its name to the New Orleans Pelicans.

  • He helped the team reach the playoffs in 2011.
  • The Pelicans also made it to the Western Conference Playoffs during the 2014–15 season with Vinson as part of the coaching staff.
  • He continued to be an assistant coach for the Pelicans until the end of the 2023 season.
