History of Frederick
Frederick became an official city, or was incorporated, in 1909. It was once an important place for shipping goods. This was because two railroad lines, the Missouri Pacific and the St. Louis & San Francisco, met there.
A post office opened in Frederick in 1887. It stayed open for many years until it closed in 1954. Sometimes, the city's name was spelled "Frederic."
Challenges for Frederick's Future
In 2015, government officials thought about un-incorporating Frederick. This means they considered stopping it from being an official city. By August 2015, Frederick had no city council, which is a group of people who help run the city. Also, no one ran for mayor in April 2015.
The future of Frederick was unclear because Rice County couldn't simply un-incorporate the city. According to Kansas law, residents need to ask the city council to hold a special election. But since there was no city council, this couldn't happen.
Voting on the City's Future
In November 2016, the people of Frederick voted on whether to dissolve the city. This would mean it would no longer be an official city.
However, election workers made a mistake. They gave the wrong ballots to some people who lived nearby but not actually in Frederick. Twenty people voted, and 13 of them wanted to keep the community as a city. At that time, only 9 people actually lived in Frederick.
The mistake was found more than a week after the vote was made official. Because of this, Kansas law said the vote's outcome could not be changed. So, Frederick remained a city.
In November 2017, there was another vote to dissolve the city. This time, the vote was tied 2-2.
Geography of Frederick
