Frederick William Hervey (born July 15, 1800 – died October 30, 1864) was an important British politician. He was known by different titles during his life, such as Lord Hervey and Earl Jermyn. Eventually, he became the 2nd Marquess of Bristol. He was a member of the Tory party, which was a major political group in Britain at the time.

From 1841 to 1846, he worked as the Treasurer of the Household for Queen Victoria's government. This was under the leadership of Sir Robert Peel. He was also a member of the Privy Council, a group of advisors to the British monarch. He was also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, meaning he was interested in history and old things.

Early Life and Education

Frederick William Hervey was born in London on July 15, 1800. His birthplace was a street called Portland Place in Marylebone. He was the oldest son of Frederick Hervey, 1st Marquess of Bristol. His mother was Elizabeth Albana Upton. She was the daughter of Lord Templetown. Frederick also had a younger brother named Lord Arthur Hervey.

Frederick went to two famous schools. First, he studied at Eton, which is a well-known boarding school. After that, he attended Trinity College, Cambridge, a famous university.

Political Career and Public Service

In 1826, Frederick's father became a Marquess. This meant Frederick was then known as Earl Jermyn. In the same year, he became a Member of Parliament (MP). He represented the area of Bury St Edmunds.

In 1841, he joined the Privy Council. This is a group of important people who advise the King or Queen. At the same time, he was given the job of Treasurer of the Household. This role involved managing the royal household's finances. He held this position in the Tory government led by Sir Robert Peel. He kept this job until the government changed in 1846.

Frederick continued to be an MP for Bury St Edmunds until 1859. In that year, his father passed away. Frederick then became the 2nd Marquess of Bristol. This meant he moved from the House of Commons to the House of Lords. The House of Lords is the upper house of the British Parliament. Besides politics, he was also a Colonel in the West Suffolk Militia. This was a local military force. He was also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.
