Frederick Orpen Bower (born November 4, 1855 – died April 11, 1948) was an important English botanist. A botanist is a scientist who studies plants. He was a very respected scientist. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1891. This is a big honor for scientists. He also won the Gold Medal of the Linnean Society in 1909. Later, he received the Darwin Medal from the Royal Society in 1938. He even led the British Association from 1929 to 1930.

His Life and Education
Frederick Orpen Bower was born in Ripon, a town in Yorkshire, England. His father was Abraham Bower. His mother, Cornelia Morris, was the sister of a famous botanist named Francis Orpen Morris.
Frederick went to Repton School in Derbyshire. After that, he studied at Trinity College, Cambridge. He earned his Master of Arts (MA) degree there in 1877.
His Career in Botany
In 1880, Frederick Bower started working at University College, London. He was an assistant lecturer in botany. He worked under a famous scientist named Thomas Huxley.
Two years later, in 1882, he became a full lecturer in botany. This was at South Kensington. During this time, he also spent time at Kew Gardens. There, he studied with another botanist, Dukinfield Henry Scott.
In 1885, he became a professor of botany. This was at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. He taught and researched there until he retired in 1925.
Frederick Bower never got married. When he retired, he moved back to his hometown of Ripon. He passed away there in April 1948.
