Frederick Richard Mallet (born February 10, 1841 – died June 24, 1921) was an Irish geologist. He spent thirty years working for the Geological Survey of India. This organization studies the Earth's rocks and minerals in India.

Frederick Richard Mallet: A Geologist's Journey

Frederick Richard Mallet was born in Dublin, Ireland. His father, Robert Mallet, was also a famous geologist. Frederick went to the Enniskillen Royal School. In February 1859, he joined the Geological Survey of India. He was only 18 years old when he started this important work.

Exploring India's Geology

Mallet traveled all over India for his job. He explored the mighty Himalayas and Central India. He also worked in Assam and Burma. Besides fieldwork, he managed the Survey's Museum and Laboratory. He wrote many scientific papers about the geology of the Vindhya range. He also studied the Barren Island volcano in the Andaman Islands. This volcano is the only active one in India.

Discovering Coal and Craters

In 1883, Mallet became a Superintendent of the Survey. He retired in 1889. He helped write a big book called "Manual of the Geology of India." His part focused on mineralogy, which is the study of minerals. Mallet helped survey coalfields in several areas. These included the Naga Hills, the Son Valley, and Rewa. He went on expeditions with other geologists, Ferdinand Stoliczka and William Theobald. They explored the Sutlej and Spiti valleys. In 1869, he was the first scientist to study the Ramgarh crater. This is a large impact crater formed by a meteorite.

Beyond Rocks: Other Interests

Frederick Mallet was not just interested in geology. He also loved biology, especially birds. He exchanged letters with Allan Octavian Hume, a famous bird expert.

A Recognized Scientist

In 1868, Frederick Mallet was chosen to join the Geological Society of London. This is a very respected group for geologists. He passed away in Ealing, England, in 1921. He was 80 years old.
