Frederick Dellenbaugh was born in McConnelsville, Ohio. He studied in both the United States and Europe. From a young age, he was drawn to exploring the American West.
Discovering New Lands
As a young explorer, Dellenbaugh joined an important expedition. This trip led to the discovery of the last unknown river in the United States, the Escalante River. They also found the Henry Mountains, which were previously uncharted.
Adventures with Major Powell
From 1871 to 1873, Dellenbaugh was part of Major Powell's second expedition. He served as an artist and assistant topographer. A topographer helps map out the land. This team explored the mighty Colorado River.
Exploring Alaska and Beyond
In 1899, Dellenbaugh joined the Harriman Alaska Expedition. This journey was paid for by a wealthy railroad owner, E. H. Harriman. The expedition explored the wild beauty of Alaska.
Frederick Dellenbaugh also worked as a librarian for the American Geographical Society. He was a member of the American Ethnological Society. In 1904, he helped start the Explorers Club. This club brings together people who love to explore.
