Sir Frederick Henry Stewart (16 January 1916 – 9 December 2001) was a famous Scottish geologist. He was also a professor at the University of Edinburgh. Geologists study the Earth's rocks, landforms, and history.
Early Life and Education
Frederick Stewart was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, on 16 January 1916. His father, Frederick Robert Stewart, was an engineering lecturer at Aberdeen University.
Frederick went to school at Fettes College and Robert Gordon's College. He first studied Zoology at Aberdeen University. Later, he earned a special degree called a PhD in Geology. He got this degree from Emmanuel College, Cambridge. For his PhD, he studied the rocks on the Isle of Skye and near Belhelvie in Scotland.
His Family Life
In 1945, Frederick Stewart married Mary Rainbow. She later became a very well-known novelist, writing many popular books. They met while he was working in Durham. Mary lived until 2014. They did not have any children.
Awards and Recognition
Sir Frederick Stewart received many important awards for his work. These awards showed how much his scientific contributions were valued.
- He received special honorary doctorates from several universities. These included the Universities of Aberdeen, Leicester, Heriot-Watt University, Durham, and Glasgow.
- In 1957, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This is a group of top experts in Scotland.
- He was chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 1964. This is a very high honor for scientists in the United Kingdom.
- The Geological Society of London gave him the Lyell Medal in 1970. This medal is for excellent work in geology.
- In 1974, he was made a Knight. This means he was given the title "Sir" by the Queen.
- He was also a founding member of the World Cultural Council in 1981. This council promotes science, art, and education around the world.
