Frederick R. Weedon (born around 1784, died around 1857) was a doctor who worked for the U.S. Army. He served as a surgeon during the Second Seminole War. Dr. Weedon was the physician who cared for important Seminole leaders like Osceola and Uchee Billy after they were captured.
Early Life and Military Service
Frederick R. Weedon was born in Maryland. His father, William Weedon, was a colonel in the American Revolutionary War. Frederick followed his father's example and served in the U.S. Army during the War of 1812.
A Doctor in Florida
After his military service, Dr. Weedon moved to Alabama. Later, he moved to the Florida Territory. This was what Florida was called before it became a state. In Florida, he was one of the first people to get land under a special law. This law was called the Armed Occupation Act of 1842. It helped people get land in areas like Mosquito County. Today, this area is known as St. Lucie County.
Family and Legacy
Frederick R. Weedon's son, Hamilton Moore Weedon, also became a doctor. Hamilton served in the Fourth Florida Infantry during the American Civil War. He was in charge of a hospital for the Confederate army in Eufaula, Alabama.
