Fredi Jesús González (born January 28, 1964) is a baseball coach and manager. He was born in Cuba and is now an American citizen. Fredi is currently the third base coach for the Atlanta Braves. This is a team in Major League Baseball (MLB).

He used to manage two other MLB teams. He led the Florida Marlins from 2007 to 2010. Then, he managed the Braves from 2011 to 2016. Before becoming a manager, he was a third base coach for the Braves for four years. Even though his Marlins team didn't reach the playoffs, he helped the Braves get there in 2012 and 2013.

Fredi González's Baseball Journey

Early Life and Playing Days

Fredi González was born in Holguín, Cuba. His parents were Fredi and Caridad González. He grew up in Miami, Florida, and went to Southridge High School. In 1982, the New York Yankees chose him in the baseball draft.

He played as a catcher in the Yankees' minor league teams for six years. He never played higher than the Double-A level. After playing, he became a graduate assistant coach. This was for the University of Tennessee Volunteers baseball team.

Starting His Coaching Career

Fredi began his managing career in 1990. He took over the Miami Miracle team. This team was part of the Florida State League. He stayed with the Miracle until 1991.

In 1992, he joined the Florida Marlins organization. He was chosen to be the first coach for the Marlins' new players. These players were assigned to the Erie Sailors minor league team. González coached many teams within the Marlins organization. In 1997, he managed the Portland Sea Dogs. This was a Double-A team for the Marlins. He led the Sea Dogs to a great season, finishing first in their division. He then moved up to the main Marlins team in 1999. He was their third base coach for two seasons.

Managing the Marlins

After leaving the Marlins, Fredi worked with the Braves' Triple-A team in 2002. He then joined the main Atlanta Braves team in 2003. On October 3, 2006, he became the manager of the Florida Marlins. He was even named a coach for the 2007 National League All-Star Team. After the 2008 season, he won the Sporting News Manager of the Year Award.

In 2010, Fredi won more games than any other manager in Marlins history. However, on June 23, 2010, he was fired as Marlins manager. He had led the team to winning seasons in 2008 and 2009. This was impressive because the Marlins had one of the lowest budgets in Major League Baseball.

Leading the Atlanta Braves

On October 13, 2010, Fredi González became the new manager for the Atlanta Braves. He took over from the famous manager Bobby Cox. In his first year, 2011, the Braves were close to making the playoffs. But they had a tough end to the season and missed out. Some people thought he used his relief pitchers too much.

It was a loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. He won his first playoff game on October 4, 2013. This was a win against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Division Series.

After a difficult start to the 2016 season, Fredi was fired by the Braves on May 17, 2016.

Back to Coaching Roles

On November 7, 2016, the Miami Marlins hired Fredi again. He became their third base coach. He stayed with the Marlins until the end of the 2019 season.

In December 2019, it was announced that Fredi would join the Baltimore Orioles as a major league coach. He worked with the Orioles until the end of the 2024 season. In the spring of 2025, Fredi was a volunteer coach at Ursinus College. He also worked as an umpire evaluator for Major League Baseball. On June 2, 2025, Fredi González was hired by the Atlanta Braves once more. He is now their third base coach.
